Agatha the Hen Free Crochet Pattern

Hello my friends and welcome back to my blog!


If my latest design - Benny the Seal - was all about sweetness, today's project is about fun and quirky shapes.


You never know what will come out when sketching out ideas! I wanted to make a hen and after few pencil strokes I came out with a very simple design that I immediately loved. And for such peculiar design I couldn't choose anything but a unique and yet adorable name!


...and this is how Agatha the Hen was born!

Here's the FREE pattern!


YARN: Light (3) Green, Brick, Yellow and White; Classic Cotton Thread in Black

MATERIALS: C2 - 2.75 mm Hook; Poly Filling

DIMENSION: H. 4.5” x W. 6”

ABBREVIATIONS: magic ring (mr), stitch (st), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), half double crochet, fasten off (F/O)

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

INSTRUCTIONS: work in rounds

(join with a sl st and ch 1 at the end of each round) unless otherwise instructed.

BODY (green yarn)

Rnd 1: 31 ch, 1 sc inc into the 2nd ch from the hook, 28 sc, 2 sc inc into the last ch, keep working on the other side of the foundation ch, 28 sc, 1 sc inc into the last st that already contains 2 sc (64)

Rnd 2: 2 sc inc, 28 sc, 4 sc inc, 28 sc, 2 sc inc (72)

Rnd 3: 2 sc inc, 32 sc, 4 sc inc, 32 sc, 2 sc inc (80)

Rnd 4 - 8: sc even (80)

Rnd 9: (8 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (72)

Rnd 10: sc even (72)

Rnd 11: (7 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (64)

Rnd 12: sc even (64)

Rnd 13: (6 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (56)

Rnd 14: sc even (56)

Rnd 15: (5 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (48)

Rnd 16: sc even (48)

Rnd 17: (6 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (42)

Rnd 18: sc even (42); start stuffing

Rnd 19: (5 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (36)

Rnd 20: (4 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (30)

Rnd 21: (1 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (20)

Rnd 22: sc dec around (10); finish stuffing

Rnd 23: sc dec around (5)

F/O, cut the yarn and wave in end.


BEAK (yellow yarn)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a mr (6)

Rnd 2: (2 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (8)

Rnd 3: (3 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (10)

Rnd 4: (4 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (12)

Rnd 5: (5 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (14)

Rnd 6: (6 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (16)

F/O and leave a long strand of yarn to sew the beak to one side of the body, between rnds # 2-8; stuff the beak before attaching it to the body.


CREST (brick yarn)

Make three:

Rnd 1: 8 sc in a mr (8)

Rnd 2: (3 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (10)

Rnd 3 - 4: sc even (10)

Do not cut the yarn once you have crocheted the 3rd part.

Merge the 3 parts together:

Rnd 5: join the yarn to the any one stitch of the last round of the 1st made part, work 1 sc into the same st, work 4 more sc, keep working on the 2nd made part, 10 sc, go back to the 1st part, and work 1 sc into each one of the 5 unworked sts, then keep working on the 3rd part, and crochet 10 sc (30)

Rnd 6: (1 sc, 1 sc dec) rep around (20)

F/O and leave a long strand of yarn to sew the crest to upper part of the body; do not stuff the crest, flatten it instead before attaching it.


EYES (white yarn; make 2)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a mr (6)

Rnd 2: sc inc around (12)

Rnd 3: (1 sc, 1 sc inc) rep around (18)

F/O and leave a long strand of yarn to sew the eye to the main body, between rnds # 3-10

Embroider the EYE with black cotton thread.


WINGS (green yarn; make 2)

Rnd 1: 8 sc in a mr (8)

Rnd 2: sc inc around (16)

Rnd 3: (1 sc, 1 sc inc) rep around (24)

Rnd 4: (11 sc, 2 hdc into the next st, 1 ch, 2 hdc into the next st, 11 sc (26)

F/O and leave a long strand of yarn to sew the wings to the side of the body, between rnds # 8-17; leave the pointy side of the wing detached from the body.


TAIL (brick yarn)

Make two:

Rnd 1: 8 sc in a mr (8)

Rnd 2: (3 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (10)

Rnd 3 - 4: sc even (10)

Do not cut the yarn once you have crocheted the 2nd part.

Merge the 2 parts together:

Rnd 5: join the yarn to any one stitch of the last round of the first made part, work 1 sc into the same st, then 1 sc dec, [(1 sc, 1 sc dec) rep 2 times], 1 sc into the last st, then go back working on the 2nd part, and crochet [(1 sc, 1 sc dec) rep 3 times], 1 sc into the last st (14)

F/O and leave a long strand of yarn to sew the tail to upper part of the body; do not stuff the tail, flatten it instead before attaching it to the body.



LEGS (yellow yarn; make 2)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a mr (6)

Rnd 2: (2 sc, 1 sc inc) rep twice (8)

Rnd 3 - 6: sc even (8)

F/O and leave a long strand of yarn to sew the legs to the bottom of the body.

Stuff the legs before attaching them to the body.
