Hippo Safety Blanket Free Crochet Pattern



Can you believe another month has passed by? Time really flies when having fun!!

...and how could you not have fun when spending time creating beautiful things, like this cute Hippo Safety Blanket!


Today's design is the last project worked with the amazingly soft and velvety Cover Story yarn by LION BRAND YARN!

MATERIALS:

· Lion Brand® COVER STORY® (Art. #533) #254H Waverly 1 ball (A)

· Lion Brand® Chenille Appeal Yarn® (Art. #941) #102AL Rose Dawn 1 ball (B)

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: size F (3.75 mm) and size K/L (7 mm) crochet hooks; Fiberfill stuffing; 2 plastic safety eyes, 12mm diameter

SIZE: About 21 (Head to Tail) x 20 (Leg to Leg) in. (53 x 51 cm)

ABBREVIATIONS:

beg = begin(ninig)

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet

rep = repeat

rnd(s) = round(s)

sc = single crochet

sl st = slip stitch

st(s) = stitch(es)

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together)

dc3tog (dc 3 sts together)

Blanket

With A and bigger hook.

Row 1: work 33 chains, 2 dc in 3rd chain from the hook, *1 dc in each of the next 3 chs, 3dctog, 1 dc in each of the next 3 chs, 3 dc in the next ch; rep from * twice, 1 dc in each of the next 3 chs, 3dctog, 1 dc in each of the next 3 chs, 2 dc in the next ch – 31 sts; Turn.

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in the 1st st, *1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 3dctog, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 3 dc in the next st; rep from * twice, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 3dctog, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 dc in the next st– 31 sts; Turn.

Rows 3 - 13: rep Row 2

Fasten off, and wave in ends.



Head

With A and bigger hook,

Rnd 1: Ch 7, 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each of the next 4 chs, 4 sc into the next ch; working along opposite side of beg ch-7, 1 sc in each of the next 4 chs, 2 sc into the last ch – 16 sc.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts – 24 sc.

Rnd 3: 2 sc in the 1st st, 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the each of next st 6 sts, *2 sc, 1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st; rep from * twice, 1 sc in the each of next st 6 sts, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st – 32 sc.

Rnds 4 - 6: 1 sc in each st around ­– 32 sc.

Rnd 7: *2 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around – 24 sc.

Rnd 8: *2 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around – 18 sc.

Begin stuffing piece and continue stuffing until piece is complete.

Rnd 9: working in front loop, 1 sc in each of the next 12 sts, 2 sc in each one of the next 6 sts – 24 sc.

Rnd 10: working in both loops, *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st; rep from * around – 30 sc.

Rnd 11: *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st; rep from * around – 36 sc.

Rnd 12: 1 sc in each st around ­– 36 sc.

Insert plastic safety eyes on Head between Rnds 10 and 11, about 5 sts apart (on the side we worked the increases in rnd 9).

Rnd 13: *4 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around – 30 sc.

Rnd 14: 1 sc in each st around ­– 30 sc.

Rnd 15: *3 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around – 24 sc.

Rnd 16: *1 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around – 16 sc.

Rnd 17: sc2tog around – 8 sc.


Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through top of sts of last rnd. Pull tail to close opening and knot securely. Keep the extra strand of yarn for sewing Head to Blanket.



Ears (make two)

With B and smaller hook

Row 1: Ch 4, 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in next ch, (1 hdc, 4 dc, 1 hdc) in next ch; working along opposite side of beg ch-4, 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs – 10 sts.


Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing Ears to Head between Rnds 14 and 15, about 7 sts apart.




Nostrils (make 2)

With B and smaller hook, make a magic ring.

Row 1: work 6 sc in ring; do not close the ring; pull the yarn tail to draw the center of the ring closed; Turn – 6 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in the 1st st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the next st – 8 sc.


Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing Nostrils to Head between Rnds 4 and 5, about 7 sts apart.


With B, embroider horizontal Mouth line.

With B, embroider Eyebrows between Rnds 12 and 13, 5 sts apart.

With A, sew Head to the upper side of Blanket.



Legs (make 4)

With A and bigger hook, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: work 8 sc in ring – 8 sc.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around – 16 sc.

Rnd 3: working in back loop, 1 sc in each st around – 16 sc.

Rnd 4: working in both loops, 1 sc in each st around – 16 sc.

Rnd 5: *2 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around – 12 sc.

Rnd 6: *1 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around – 8 sc; stuff Legs lightly.

Bring edges of last rnd together, matching 4 sts along each side. Working through both thicknesses, work 1 sc in the next 4 sts – 4 sc.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing Legs to Blanket.



Nails (make 12)

With B and smaller hook, make a magic ring.

Row 1: work 2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 sc in ring; do not close the ring; pull the yarn tail to draw the center of the ring closed; Turn – 6 sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts – 8 sts.


Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew Nails to Legs.


With B, sew 3 Nails to each Leg.

With A, sew front Legs to upper sides of Blanket and back Legs to lower side of Blanket.


Tail

With A and bigger hook, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: work 4 sc in ring – 4 sc.

Rnd 2: *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st; rep from * twice – 6 sc.

Rnds 3 - 4: 1 sc in each st around – 6 sc.


Cut 12 [approximately 8” (20 cm) long] strands of B yarn. Tie one side with a knot. Thread the 12 strands into a yarn needle.

Insert needle into the tail and pull it out from the center of the magic ring.


Do not stuff the Tail.

Bring edges of last rnd together, matching 3 sts along each side. Working through both thicknesses, work 1 sc in the next 3 sts – 3 sts.


Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing Tail to back of Blanket between Rows 2 and 3. Trim the strands of B yarn at desired length.
